beyond the application..
Most traditional college support services focus on helping high school students decide on and apply to college. But what about the social and emotional aspects of college readiness beyond academic preparedness?
college boot camp brings together a small group of high school seniors (virtually or in-person) to work together through all the challenges of getting ready to succeed & thrive at college (especially in the first year). We’ll meet weekly, discuss responses to personal reflections, and brainstorm how to navigate hypothetical challenges that are likely to arise during your time at college:
-
how do you balance a rigorous course load with extracurricular activities but without the constant support of your family and oldest friends?
-
how do you get to know your professors so that you can find supportive mentors (and future recommendation letter writers) early? what do you need to do in order to navigate a shared living space with people who might be quite different from you?
-
how do you figure your way around the campus resources you might need?
Why is it important to feel confident about your answers to these questions before you move into your dorm? High school juniors and seniors often hear that they'll be small fish in the huge pond of college, and student IDs rather than names, faces, and ideas. It doesn't have to be this way.
Talking through these topics doesn’t mean that we can foresee every potential issue or conflict you may experience at school, but it will absolutely equip you with the necessary skills to work through difficulties without getting overwhelmed, and to feel confident and comfortable knowing where to seek help.
